A practical update for older kitchens
Many kitchens here still have the original laminate counters, or granite that was trendy twenty years ago and now feels dated. Replacing counters means removing them, possibly damaging cabinets and backsplashes, and waiting weeks for fabrication. An epoxy countertop is poured directly over the existing surface. It creates a seamless, glossy finish that can mimic marble, granite or modern metallics, often in just a few days.
Finishes we create
- Marble look: white or cream bases with soft gray, gold or charcoal veining.
- Metallic: swirls of silver, copper, bronze or blue for a bold, modern effect.
- Solid color: clean whites, grays or blacks for a minimalist look.
- Embedded: shells, sand or other decorative items set into a clear top, popular for outdoor bars.
How the process works
We protect cabinets, floors and walls with plastic and tape. The existing counter is cleaned and sanded so the epoxy bonds. Seams in laminate are filled, and edges are built up if needed. A primer and base coat go on first. Then we pour the decorative layer, work the colors and veining by hand and use a torch to release bubbles. Finally, a clear coat adds depth and protection.
Sinks, cooktops and backsplashes
Undermount and drop-in sinks are handled differently. Drop-in sinks are usually removed and reinstalled. Undermount sinks are masked and sealed carefully. Cooktops and faucets are removed where possible. We can extend the epoxy a few inches up the wall as a backsplash or stop cleanly at existing tile.
Bathrooms and bars
Bathroom vanities, wet bars and laundry room folding counters are great candidates for epoxy. They are smaller projects, often finished in a day or two, and they make a big visual difference. Outdoor bars on covered lanais can be poured too, with UV-resistant topcoats.
Durability and care
Epoxy is hard and water resistant, but it is not heatproof. Use trivets for hot pans and cutting boards for knives. Clean with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals. Minor scratches can be buffed out, and the surface can be recoated years later.
Timeline
Most kitchens take three to four days: prep and base on day one, the decorative pour on day two, and the clear coat on day three. Light use is fine after a day or so, with full cure in about a week. We plan the schedule so you can still use part of the kitchen if needed.
Odor and ventilation
Our countertop epoxies are low odor, but we still ventilate during application. Most clients stay home during the work.
Questions
Can epoxy go over granite?
Yes, after sanding and priming.
Will it look like real stone?
From a few feet away, a well-done marble look is convincing. Up close, the depth and gloss give it a unique character.
How long does it last?
With normal care, many years, and it can be refreshed with a new topcoat.

Choosing colors for villas and condos
Smaller kitchens in villas and condos benefit from lighter counters that bounce light around the room. Soft white marble looks with faint gray veins are our most requested finish here. Darker charcoal and navy work well in larger kitchens with plenty of windows, or as a bold accent on an island or bar. We bring sample boards so you can compare them against your cabinets, flooring and backsplash before deciding, and we can photograph them in place so you can think it over before booking.
